Who We Are

Phyllis Bettles - Worship Leader

Phyllis Bettles serves as a Worship Leader and Small Group Co-Leader at FBC, where she is passionate about worship, discipleship, and encouraging others to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ.

Born and raised on a farm in South Dakota and brought up in the Baptist faith, Phyllis developed a love for music at a young age. She began singing in church choirs and as a soloist at the age of 12. Throughout her school years, band and vocal music were her favorite activities and became the foundation for a lifetime of ministry through music.

Although raised in the church, Phyllis's life journey has not always been easy. There were seasons when she stepped away from church involvement, but she never turned away from God. Through life's challenges and difficult seasons, she has experienced God's faithfulness, grace, and provision in powerful ways. Her favorite verse, Psalm 139:14, has carried her through some of her darkest moments: "I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." This verse reminds her daily that she was created intentionally in the image of God, exactly as He designed her to be. Another passage that has deeply shaped her faith is Matthew 6:24-34, which continually reassures her of God's provision and care throughout every season of life.

Over the years, Phyllis has faithfully served in church choirs, praise teams, and worship ministries. Today, she leads the worship team, creating opportunities for others to encounter God through music and praise. She is especially passionate about discipling those who are less familiar with God's Word, helping them understand how biblical principles apply to everyday life. She believes spiritual growth flourishes through authentic relationships, honest conversations, and a willingness to walk alongside one another in faith.

Phyllis also desires to remind believers that church leaders are not perfect people with perfect lives. Behind every leader is a story of struggles, victories, failures, and redemption. She believes that sharing those stories honestly points people to God's grace and demonstrates His power to work through imperfect people.

Phyllis and her husband, Tim, have been married for 46 years and are actively involved in Awana and many other areas of ministry at FBC. They enjoy sharing the story of how they met as teenagers at Camp Judson in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota and were married at the young ages of 19 and 18. Their shared commitment to faith, family, and ministry has been a cornerstone of their lives together.

She is the proud mother of two adult sons, Justin and Colby, and a loving grandmother to eight grandchildren ranging in age from 11 to 22. Whether leading worship, teaching in a small group, serving alongside her husband, or spending time with her family, Phyllis's desire is to help others experience the transforming love of Christ and discover the truth that God is faithful in every season of life.

"For I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Psalm 139:14 remains both her testimony and her reminder that God's workmanship is perfect, His provision is certain, and His love never fails.
